Tailevu Villages Benefit from Australian-funded Water Tanks
06 May 2010
The villages of Matainabou and Namuka in the tikina of Nakelo, Tailevu have had sixty one water tanks installed recently to ensure access to safe drinking water.
Funding for the project was made available through a grant of $26,250 under the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program.
Villagers in Matainabou and Namuka have faced water problems over the years with frequent cuts to their reticulated supply. With the new tanks, every household in the two villages will now have continuing access to fresh water whenever piped supplies are shut down.
Installation of the new water tanks projects was coordinated by the Ministry of Health in Nausori, under the supervision of Health Inspector Mereoni Sikinairai.
“The villages provided manpower for the construction of bases for the tanks and each household was responsible for installing roof guttering and downpipes to feed rainwater into the tanks,” Ms Sikinairai said.
“The villagers are extremely grateful for the partnership arrangement with the Australian Government which they said would improve their standard of living through access to constant supply of fresh water”.
Villages from Namuka and Matainabou acknowledged the Australian assistance when two officials from the Australian High Commission visited the projects today.
